The first season of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC) started earlier this year and was organised around 14 heats, each a week-long. During the heats, the regular motorists, who joined the challenge through their Motoring Club or online, saw their driving patterns assessed in real time thanks to an AI-based phone app, powered by Enerfy, transforming real trips into a digital score.

The eight best drivers qualified to participate in the final of the FIA SDC that took place yesterday. Starting in the morning, the finalists from France, Great Britain, Qatar, Sweden and Singapore had to complete a predetermined 4km route around Paris and drive in the smartest and safest way. Each finalist had four attempts at the route, with the driver recording the best efficiency average winning the FIA Smart Driving Challenge. In the end, Sweden’s Anders Lindström, who is a Member of the Kungliga Automobil Klubben (KAK), was announced as the winner of the challenge.

The trophy was handed over by FIA Deputy President Automobile Mobility and Tourism Thierry Willemarck and FIA Drivers’ Commission President, FIA World Championship Winner and nine-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen.

Winning Feeling

As part of the prize, Anders Lindström has been invited to the exclusive FIA Prize Giving ceremony taking place on Friday to see racing’s World Champions receive their trophies.

FIA Deputy President Thierry Willemarck, commented: “Congratulations to our first FIA Smart Driving Challenge winner who is today rewarded for his safe and eco-friendly driving skills. We believe such initiatives can improve driver behaviour and invite more FIA Clubs to join the challenge and lead that change.”

Tom Kristensen declared “Concentration, cleverness and focus are critical in order to deliver the best performance. The FIA Smart Driving Challenge is a great development promoting these skills. I recognise the involvement of 20 team leaders, including FIA World Champions from all racing disciplines, and look forward to supporting the next season.”

Anders Lindström said: “It’s been great to refine my skills on the road all year long, being a smarter, safer and more efficient driver. I have learned a lot, not only from the Enerfy app, but from my fellow competitors and my team leader. I’ve really enjoyed the challenge and look forward to continuing to be a smart driver. I’ve got to live up to my title now!”

Lindström’s team Leader and FIA World Rallycross Championship star Kevin Hansen, added: “Anders did a very good job and I’m really proud of him for winning the challenge. It has been very interesting to see drivers from across the world join the challenge and adopt smarter and more efficient driving behaviour.”

FIA Smart Driving Challenge spokesperson Tina Thörner said: “The eight finalists have been excellent. They have been true ambassadors of smart driving, not only today but throughout the year. Congratulations to Anders for becoming the first FIA Smart Driving Challenge winner!”

The 2020 season of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge will start in February, and applications are already open for new competitors. Drivers signing up now will have a chance to practice their smart driving using the Enerfy artificial intelligence mobile app ahead of next season.

The first FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC), encouraging smart, safe and environmentally-friendly driving, successfully concluded in Paris. During ten days, almost 500 drivers tested the FIA SDC technology, driving more than 2,426 kilometers.

From 4 to 14 October 2018, on the occasion of the Paris Motor Show, the FIA allowed the general public a sneak peek at this innovative experiment. Over these ten days, starting from Place de la Concorde, the registered participants, accompanied by instructors from the Automobile Club Association, tested their driving skills at the wheel of various electric, hybrid, or internal combustion cars on the course of the Paris E-Prix.

As they covered the route, their driving was evaluated, in real time via artificial intelligence, by the Enerfy® digital platform connected to a smartphone app. At the end of the experiment, participants were awarded points in order to determine their classification and their chances of becoming the smartest driver of the challenge.
After taking part in the experience, FIA President Jean Todt declared, “It goes in the right direction. We know the damage of pollution, we know the threat of climate change. All we can do to address these problems is good. I’m happy that the FIA Smart Driving Challenge is generating interest. If everybody goes in that direction, we can make our roads healthier and safer.”

Reminding that smart driving is critical to build better and safer mobility for the future, Former President of Mexico and FIA Environment and Sustainability Commission President Felipe Calderón, who also took part in the challenge, said, “To address congestion in urban areas or reduce the number of fatalities on our roads, we must drive forward projects, such as the FIA Smart Driving Challenge, that contribute towards building better mobility for the future, one which is not only safer for all road users but also more respectful to the environment.” 

Welcoming the initiative and highlighting the key importance of training as a driver, Nine-time FIA World Rally Champion and World RX Driver for Team Peugeot Total Sébastien Loeb stated, “Throughout the years, I’ve been racing on every road condition you can imagine. Now I’m looking forward to using that experience to encourage smarter driving. Being a good driver requires to be focused behind the wheel and prepared to react well in any situation. The FIA Smart Driving Challenge captures all of that and helps you improve your eco-friendly and safe driving skills.”

Le premier challenge de conduite intelligente

Le FIA Smart Driving Challenge (SDC) est une compétition qui récompense la conduite intelligente, sûre et éco-responsable.

Du 4 au 14 octobre 2018, à l’occasion du Mondial de l’Automobile à Paris, la FIA permettra au grand public de découvrir cette expérience pour la première fois. Pendant dix jours, au départ de la Place de la Concorde, les participants inscrits, accompagnés d’instructeurs de l’Automobile Club Association, pourront venir tester leurs talents de conducteur à bord de différentes voitures électriques, hybrides ou thermiques sur le parcours de l’E-Prix de Paris.

Au cours du trajet, leur conduite sera évaluée en temps réel grâce à l’intelligence artificielle par la plateforme digitale Enerfy® connectée à une application smartphone. À la fin de l’expérience, les participants se verront attribuer un nombre de points qui déterminera leur classement et leurs chances de devenir le conducteur le plus « smart ».

Les inscriptions sont ouvertes à tous sur ce site et sur la Place de la Concorde, et à partir du 4 octobre 2018 sur le stand FIA au Mondial Tech (Hall 7 du Mondial de l’Automobile) et sur le stand de l’Automobile Club Association au Mondial de l’Automobile (Hall 2.2).
